Foreshore Freeway Bridge

Half-finished concrete flyover abandoned mid-construction since the 1970s

The Foreshore Freeway Bridge is one of the more peculiar features of central Cape Town: a wide concrete flyover whose central span was never completed, leaving the road to end abruptly in mid-air above the Foreshore traffic. It has stood unfinished for more than fifty years, despite repeated revival attempts.

The bridge has become an accidental urban landmark and a popular spot for film shoots. Several recent proposals — affordable housing slung beneath the unfinished span, a public park, a market — have failed to find support. For now, the half-bridge remains a small monument to the limits of municipal ambition.

A story
Construction on the Foreshore Freeway began in the 1970s as part of an ambitious motorway plan that would have driven elevated highways right through the historic centre. Funding collapsed, the project was abandoned, and the central section of the flyover has never been connected — it ends in mid-air, looking out over the Foreshore at exactly the height of a passing seabird.
