Al-Mogran

The narrow tongue of land where the two Niles meet

Al-Mogran is the long, narrow point of land that pushes north between the Blue and White Niles to the very tip of the confluence. It gives the city its old nickname — Al-Khartoum literally means "elephant's trunk," after the shape of this peninsula. For most of the 20th century it was a quiet area of riverfront gardens, the botanical garden, and the small Mogran Family Park.

A large mixed-use redevelopment project announced in the 2000s aimed to fill the area with high-rise office towers and a marina, but most of the plans stalled, leaving a strange mix of cleared lots, half-built shells, and the older parks. It is still the best part of the city for a Nile-side walk and the obvious route to and from the confluence itself.
