Tuti Bridge

The single-pylon suspension bridge to Tuti Island, opened in 2009

Tuti Bridge is the cable-stayed bridge that links central Khartoum to Tuti Island. Designed by a German engineering firm and opened in 2009, it replaced a small ferry that had served the island for more than a century. The single concrete pylon and fan of cables make it the most modern-looking structure in central Khartoum.

The bridge is worth the walk for the view as much as for the crossing. Halfway across you can see the Blue Nile downstream, the lights of Omdurman to the west, and the green strip of the island in front of you. Sunset is the best time — locals come up to take photos and the air over the water finally cools.
