Omdurman Bridge

The historic White Nile bridge connecting Khartoum and Omdurman

The Omdurman Bridge, also called the White Nile Bridge, opened in 1928 to link the colonial-era city of Khartoum with the older Mahdist capital across the river. For most of the 20th century it was the only bridge across the White Nile in the area, carrying the entire traffic of the two cities and the railway to the west.

The bridge is steel-trussed, painted off-white, and lit at night — handsome rather than spectacular, but worth crossing on foot at dawn or dusk for the view back at Khartoum's skyline and out towards the confluence. There is a separate pedestrian walkway, and on a clear evening you can see the dome of the Mahdi's Tomb rising above Omdurman to the west.
