Khartoum 2

Leafy diplomatic neighbourhood with cafes and embassies

Khartoum 2 (Al-Khartoum Athnayn) is one of the older planned districts of the capital, laid out by the British in the 1950s as a residential area for civil servants. Today it is a quiet, leafy neighbourhood between the airport and the river, home to several embassies, the Greek Club, and a clutch of villa-restaurants and cafes.

It is not a sightseeing area, but it is a good place to base yourself or to wander on foot in the cooler evening hours. The streets are wide, lined with neem trees, and many of the original bungalows still survive among newer apartment buildings. Most of the city's better foreign restaurants are within walking distance.
