The Sudan National Museum is Khartoum's standout attraction. Its collection spans several thousand years of Sudanese history, from prehistoric tools through the ancient kingdom of Kush to the Christian and Islamic periods. The highlights are the Kushite antiquities — glassware, pottery, statuary, and figurines from a civilization that rivalled Egypt in power and sophistication.
In the garden outside, two small Egyptian temples rescued from the rising waters of Lake Nasser have been reconstructed. They were gifted to Sudan by UNESCO during the 1960s Nubian salvage campaign, the same effort that saved Abu Simbel.
