Bongoyo Island

Half-hour boat ride from the Slipway to the cleanest swimming reef near the city.

A flat coral island in the marine reserve north of the city, half an hour by speedboat from the Msasani Slipway. The west-facing beach is short but spectacular — soft white sand, palm shade, and clear water over a fringing reef that is easy to snorkel even at high tide. A handful of low-impact bandas and a single restaurant under the trees keep things simple; you bring your towel, you rent a mask, you order grilled fish and chips when you arrive.

Boats run every couple of hours during daylight; the last return is typically around five. The marine reserve charges a small fee on top of the boat ticket. Bring sunblock and bug spray — both are expensive on the island — and book ahead at the weekend, when day-trippers from Dar fill the beach.
