Julius Nyerere International Airport, 13 km southwest of the centre, is Tanzania's main hub, with daily connections to Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Doha, Istanbul, Amsterdam and across the region. A taxi into town costs around US$25–30 and takes 30–60 minutes depending on traffic. The TAZARA railway runs to Zambia (slow and unreliable but a memorable journey), and long-distance buses from Arusha, Mbeya and the Malawian and Mozambican borders all terminate at the chaotic Ubungo bus station on the western edge of the city. Most travellers arrive or leave by ferry from Zanzibar — fast catamarans cross in about two hours from the harbour terminal next to the fish market.
