Dar es Salaam has more beach than its city-sized reputation suggests. The closest is Coco Beach at Oyster Bay, in town and good for a stroll or swim, especially busy on Sunday afternoons. For a proper day trip, the resort beaches at Kunduchi and Bahari Beach lie about 25 km north — long stretches of white sand backed by palms, with day-use access at the hotels. South of the Kivukoni ferry, the unspoilt strands at Kigamboni feel a world away from the city: take the small passenger ferry from the fish market and walk or grab a bajaji to South Beach. Just offshore, Bongoyo Island (a 30-minute boat from the Slipway) has the cleanest swimming water within easy reach of the city.
