The big set-piece is Kariakoo Market — covered in detail under things to do — but the city has plenty of smaller corners worth a wander. Mwenge Carvers' Market, north of the centre near the Village Museum, is the place for Makonde ebony carvings, Tinga Tinga paintings and other crafts; haggling is expected and polite. Nyumba ya Sanaa on Ohio Street is a quieter cooperative where you can watch artists at work. For everyday shopping the air-conditioned Mlimani City and Slipway malls are the easiest options. Cloth — kanga and kitenge in fierce, bright patterns — is best bought along Uhuru and Msimbazi Streets in Kariakoo.
