Dar's food scene reflects its history as a Swahili-coast trading port — Indian, Arab and African influences sit side by side on the same menu. Look for grilled fish and prawns straight from the Kivukoni market, biryani and samosas in the Indian quarter around Kisutu, and the local mishkaki (skewered grilled meat) sold from street braziers after dark. The cluster of restaurants along Haile Selassie Road and on the Msasani Peninsula is where most visitors end up; Kariakoo and the city centre are better for cheap, busy lunchtime canteens.
