Laid out in 1893 by the German agronomist Stuhlmann, the gardens were originally a research site for tropical crops and still hold mature jacarandas, baobabs, and a tangle of palms and flowering trees. They are small and a little neglected, but they offer the best green refuge in the centre and sit conveniently next door to the National Museum.
