At the eastern end of the harbour, on the strip of land where the Kigamboni ferry departs, the Kivukoni fish market kicks off at dawn when the dhows and outrigger canoes return with the night's catch. Tuna, kingfish, octopus, prawns and rays are auctioned on the floor, gutted on the spot, and sold on. The smell is what you would expect; the colour and noise are unforgettable. Stop afterwards at one of the open-air grills nearby for skewered fish straight off the coals.
