Kigamboni Bridge

Concrete cable-stayed bridge over the harbour mouth — the modern landmark of Dar.

The Mwl. Nyerere Bridge, almost always called the Kigamboni Bridge, opened in 2016 — a 680-metre cable-stayed span across the mouth of the harbour, linking the city centre to the Kigamboni peninsula. It was the first cable-stayed bridge of any size in East Africa and the construction was managed by Chinese engineers as part of the Belt and Road programme.

The bridge has become the modern symbol of Dar. The best view of the structure is from the southern bank, where a small park at the foot of the tower allows you to walk underneath the cables and out onto a viewing platform over the water. At night the cables are lit white-blue against the harbour. The bridge can be crossed on foot, but the pavement is exposed and the traffic noisy — most visitors just drive across once for the experience.
