Kunduchi stretches for several kilometres along the coast north of the city, a wide arc of white sand backed by coconut palms and a string of low-rise hotels. It is the closest place to Dar to feel as though you have left the city behind. The water is shallow and very warm; at low tide the reef shelf extends a long way out and is mostly easy walking, with sea urchins to watch out for.
Most visitors come for a day at one of the hotel beaches — Whitesands and the older Kunduchi Beach Hotel both sell day passes that include lounger, towel, and pool access. The other reason to come is the boats: speedboats to Bongoyo and Mbudya, fishing trips, and longer charters to Lazy Lagoon further north.
