Mamboz Corner BBQ

Pavement grill on Morogoro Road — the city's most famous mishkaki.

Mamboz Corner is an institution: a brick-fronted grill on the corner of Morogoro Road and Libya Street that fires up its charcoals in the late afternoon and works flat out until well past midnight. The signature dish is mishkaki — skewered beef or chicken marinated in spice and grilled over open coals — served with naan and a coconut-and-coriander chutney that is half the appeal. Whole fish, prawns, and a few stews fill out the menu.

You eat at plastic tables on the pavement under bare-bulb lighting, or take it away in foil. Cash only. The queue at the grill window is the best clue to wait time; on a good Friday night it stretches to the road.
