Built by German missionaries between 1897 and 1902, the Roman Catholic cathedral on Sokoine Drive is the most striking surviving piece of German colonial architecture in the city. The Gothic-revival spire is visible from the harbour and used to be a navigation landmark for ships approaching port. The interior keeps its original stained glass and carved wooden altar. Mass is still held daily.
