State House

White-walled presidential palace facing Magogoni Bay — visible only from the road.

The Tanzanian president's official residence sits at the top of the seafront drive on a low promontory between Ocean Road Hospital and Magogoni Ferry. The German governor's house occupied the site from 1897 until the British shelled it in 1916; the current low white classical building, with its small dome and shaded portico, was put up in 1922 and has been extended several times since.

You cannot enter or stop in front of it — the guards take a dim view of either — but the road past is a public route and a slow drive-by gives a clear view from the inland side. The lawns sweeping down to the harbour are best seen from the Kigamboni ferry on the return leg.
