About 10 km north of the centre on the road to Bagamoyo, the Village Museum is an open-air collection of authentically built homesteads representing 16 of Tanzania's ethnic groups — Sukuma, Chagga, Nyakyusa, Hehe, Maasai and others. Traditional dance performances are staged on weekend afternoons, and craftspeople demonstrate carving, weaving and pottery in residence. It is one of the most enjoyable ways to grasp the country's cultural variety without leaving the capital.
