Tunis sits on the Mediterranean coast, and several good beaches are within easy reach of the city centre. La Marsa, in the affluent northern suburbs, is the safest and most popular choice. Further along the coast, the beaches near Carthage and Sidi Bou Said are more scenic, with the ruins and whitewashed village as a backdrop. Be aware of petty theft on busier stretches, and stick to well-populated areas.
