Tunisian food is bold and spicy. Harissa shows up on every table, couscous is the staple, and grilled fish is excellent given the city's coastal position. Cheap local restaurants serve generous plates of couscous, brik (fried pastry with egg), and ojja (spicy egg stew) for a few dinars. The Ville Nouvelle has more upscale French-influenced restaurants along Avenue Habib Bourguiba and the surrounding streets.
