Independence Monument

Central statue marking Uganda's independence from Britain in 1962

The Independence Monument stands at the roundabout on Parliament Avenue in central Kampala, marking Uganda's independence from Britain on 9 October 1962. The bronze figure depicts a man breaking free from chains — a straightforward but powerful piece of mid-century nationalist sculpture. It was designed by the Ugandan sculptor Gregory Maloba and unveiled on independence day.

The monument is a useful orientation point in central Kampala, close to the Parliament buildings and the main government offices. The surrounding area is busy and commercial, and the contrast between the revolutionary imagery of the statue and the traffic chaos around it is very Kampala. Worth five minutes on any walk through the city centre.
