Rubaga Cathedral

Roman Catholic cathedral on Lubaga Hill with commanding city views

Rubaga Cathedral (formally the Cathedral of the Martyrs) sits on Lubaga Hill in western Kampala, one of the city's seven hills, and its twin towers are visible from many parts of the city. Built in 1925 on the site of an earlier church, it is the seat of the Archbishop of Kampala and the centre of the country's Roman Catholic community.

The cathedral is dedicated to the Uganda Martyrs — the 22 young men, converts to Christianity, who were executed on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga in 1886. Their story (Catholic and Anglican converts killed together) is one of the more complex episodes in Uganda's history. The interior is simple but dignified, and the hill itself gives some of the best views over Namirembe Hill and the mosque opposite.
