The most important Shia site in Kabul, in the Karte Sakhi district at the foot of the Asamayi mountain in the west of the city. The complex centres on a turquoise-tiled mosque believed to mark a footprint of Ali, the fourth caliph and central figure of Shia Islam, and the surrounding plaza is the focus of the Hazara community's celebration of Nowruz, the Persian new year.
The Hazaras of west Kabul have been repeatedly targeted by sectarian attacks; the area has been the site of several bombings over the past decade. When conditions allow, the mosque and the steps up the hill to the shrine of Bibi Mahru behind it are an important window into Hazara Kabul.
