Tajbeg Palace

A second royal palace from the Amanullah era, on a hill near Darul Aman, originally built as the queen's residence. Smaller and more elegant than its larger neighbour, with a long colonnade across the front and a domed central hall, it was used as a Soviet military headquarters in the 1980s and damaged in the wars that followed.

Restoration began in the late 2010s. The building is not open to the public at the moment but the exterior and the hilltop position, with views down to the National Museum and the Darul Aman ruins, justify the drive out for those interested in modern Afghan history.

A story
The palace was the headquarters of the Afghan president Hafizullah Amin in December 1979. On the night of 27 December, Soviet special forces stormed the building in Operation Storm-333, killed Amin, and installed Babrak Karmal — the act that opened the decade-long Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Hundreds were killed in the assault inside these walls.
