OMAR Mine Museum

A small museum maintained by the Organization for Mine Clearance and Afghan Rehabilitation, set up to teach Afghans — and the occasional foreign visitor — what landmines look like and what they do. The displays are blunt: rows of devices recovered from across Afghanistan, photographs of the casualties, training models of common Soviet and Italian mines.

Afghanistan remains one of the most heavily mined countries on earth. The museum is not a comfortable visit, but it is short, important, and a corrective to any romanticism about wandering off the beaten track in the countryside. Free entry; donations support the deminers.
