Eidgah Mosque

A large Sunni mosque east of the Bala Hissar, dating in its present form from the late nineteenth century, when it was rebuilt by Amir Abdur Rahman. The name refers to its function: an eidgah is an open-air prayer ground used for the Eid festivals, and on those mornings the courtyard fills with tens of thousands of worshippers.

The interior is less ornate than the Abdul Rahman mosque, but the courtyard is one of the largest enclosed open spaces in the old city and has historical significance — most twentieth-century kings of Afghanistan were proclaimed here.
