The Independence Hotel is the most architecturally significant building in Sihanoukville — a stark concrete modernist tower built in 1963, perched on a low cliff above its own beach. The geometry is pure Vann Molyvann: clean horizontal lines, deep overhangs against the tropical sun, generous public spaces.
You do not need to be a guest to walk through. The lobby and seafront terrace are open to non-residents, and a coffee on the cliffside lawn is an easy hour. The hotel's history — abandonment, occupation, restoration — mirrors that of Cambodia in miniature.
