Xihui Park and Huishan Temple

Xihui Park combines two hills — Xi Hill and Hui Hill — with the Huishan Temple complex below them, in a single large green space on the western edge of the old city. The park includes the famous Second Spring, several functioning temples, pavilions with views over the canal district, and extensive walking trails through bamboo and pine woodland.

Huishan Temple, at the park's core, dates to the Southern Qi Dynasty (5th century) and has been rebuilt several times; the current structure is historically layered without being confusing. The park is used daily by local residents for morning exercise and tai chi, and its lived-in character is a pleasant contrast to the more packaged lakeside destinations. Admission is modest, and the park is busiest in the morning.

A story
The Second Spring Under Heaven — a well in this park — was ranked number two among China's best spring water for tea by the Tang Dynasty tea master Lu Yu in his celebrated text "The Classic of Tea." The well still exists, and though the water is no longer drunk from it, the ranking made Wuxi briefly famous across the tea-drinking world more than a thousand years ago.
