Akasaganga Waterfall

A sacred waterfall about 3 km from the Tirumala temple, one of the famous tirthas (holy water bodies) of the seven hills. Water from the falls is the only water used in the daily bathing ritual of the temple's main deity.

The site is small and atmospheric — a stepped path leads down to the falls and a small shrine at the base. Visiting is straightforward; most Tirumala pilgrims combine the trip with the Papavinasanam Dam and waterfall a few kilometres further on. Shared jeeps and TTD buses connect Tirumala temple complex to both. The falls are most dramatic during and just after the monsoon (August–November).

A story
Akasaganga means 'sky-river' in Sanskrit. Temple tradition holds that the water from this spring is the only water pure enough to bathe the deity of Sri Venkateswara — daily, for centuries, water has been carried by hand from the falls to the temple for the ritual abhishekam. The system continues today: a small TTD team makes the journey before sunrise every morning.
