Padmavati Temple, Tiruchanur

A major temple 5 km south of Tirupati town in Tiruchanur, dedicated to the goddess Padmavati. The temple is theologically inseparable from Tirumala — the goddess is the consort of Venkateswara, and most pilgrim itineraries include both temples.

The temple is significantly less crowded than Tirumala. Architecturally it follows the standard Dravidian template with a central gopuram and surrounding shrines to the goddess in her various forms. Queues are typically under an hour, even during major pilgrim seasons. Combine with the Govindaraja temple in central Tirupati for a coherent half-day itinerary of the town's principal Vaishnavite sites.

A story
Local tradition holds that worship at Tirumala is incomplete without first paying respects to Goddess Padmavati at Tiruchanur — she is the consort of Venkateswara. Pilgrims who go straight to the hill temple without honouring the goddess are said to receive incomplete blessings. The temple kitchen at Tiruchanur is famous for its 'Padmavati Laddoo', distinct from the more famous Tirumala laddoo, and prepared in much smaller quantities.
