The Sri Venkateswara Swami Temple sits on the seventh of the Tirumala hills, 3,200 feet above the plain. It is the most-visited religious site in the world by attendance, drawing 40 million to 60 million pilgrims a year. The black-stone idol of Lord Venkateswara stands in the inner sanctum, draped in gold, jewels, and flowers, and is the object of every visit.
The darshan (viewing) process is industrial in scale. Pilgrims book online (Sarva Darshan free token or various paid Seeghra and Special Entry slots) and pass through long queue corridors (Vaikuntam Q) before reaching the inner sanctum. The actual sight of the deity, when it comes, lasts only seconds; the queues to get there can take 1 to 24 hours depending on the day and the ticket type. Every visitor leaves with at least one Tirupati laddoo, the temple's famous prasadam, included in the ticket. Photography is strictly forbidden inside the temple complex; phones are checked at the entry.
