Bhujia Fort

Walled hilltop fort overlooking the city

The crenellated fort that runs along the ridge of Bhujia Hill is dedicated to Bhujang Nag, the serpent deity who gives the city its name. It was built in stages from the 1620s and reinforced after a six-month siege in 1763. The walls, bastions and gateway are mostly intact; inside the enclosure are a temple to Bhujang Nag and a small shrine.

The walk up from the Smritivan side is steep but short — about 30 minutes — with views across the salt flats and the city laid out below. Combine the visit with the earthquake memorial at the foot of the hill.
