Chhatardi Royal Cenotaphs

Sandstone royal mausoleums on the outskirts of town

A walled garden of stone cenotaphs on the southern edge of Bhuj commemorates the maharaos of Kutch from the 18th and 19th centuries. The most impressive — that of Rao Lakhpatji, the patron of the Aina Mahal — is an octagonal red sandstone pavilion with intricately carved columns, brackets and a stepped dome.

The 2001 earthquake severely damaged the complex; several smaller cenotaphs collapsed and have only partly been rebuilt. The site is rarely crowded and has the half-melancholy atmosphere of an abandoned palace garden. Best visited in the late afternoon when the sandstone glows orange.
