Founded in 1877 as the Fergusson Museum, this is the oldest museum in Gujarat and one of the oldest in India. The two-storey colonial building beside Hamirsar Lake houses a comprehensive overview of Kutch's material culture: Kshatrapa inscriptions in extinct scripts, Maitraka-period sculpture, miniature paintings, royal weapons, currency, palanquins and ivory work.
The strongest galleries are those devoted to Kutchi textiles — vivid Rabari embroidery, mirror-studded ahir work, Mochi chain-stitch, Ajrakh block-printed cotton, beadwork and silver jewellery from each of the region's communities. Allow at least an hour. Closed Wednesdays and the second and fourth Saturday of each month.
