Sadashivgad Fort

Maratha hilltop fort overlooking the Kali River mouth

The Maratha fort of Sadashivgad stands on a hill above the confluence of the Kali River and the Arabian Sea, commanding views over the river mouth and the coastline in both directions. It is the town's most prominent historical landmark — the Portuguese built an earlier fortification here before it passed through several hands, and the Marathas gave it its current name. A steep path leads up from near the Kali River bridge; the climb takes about twenty minutes and the panorama from the top repays the effort, particularly at dusk when the river goes golden.
