Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, officially the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, protects lowland forest and riverine habitat on the edge of Kerala's Western Ghats. It is one of southern India's classic birding sites, with hornbills, kingfishers, drongos, owls, and many smaller forest species drawing patient visitors.
From Munnar it is a long but worthwhile change of ecosystem, descending from tea hills to warmer forest. Go with a local guide if birds are your reason for visiting; without one, the sanctuary can feel quiet and elusive. Early morning is the time to be there.
