Lal Bagh Palace is the more extravagant of Indore's two major Holkar palaces, built in the late 19th century in a full Italian Renaissance style that was fashionable among Indian princes of the era who wanted to signal their sophistication to British colonial visitors. The result is a curious and rather wonderful collision of cultures: a Maratha dynasty's summer palace with marble halls, crystal chandeliers, formal French gardens, and a ballroom designed for European-style entertainments.
The palace is now a museum and the interiors can be visited. The dining hall, the throne room, and the private apartments all contain original Holkar furnishings and give a vivid picture of the court's cosmopolitan tastes. The formal gardens around the palace are well-maintained and pleasant to walk through. The palace is about 4 km south of the Rajwada in a quieter part of the city.
