Dapoli

Konkan coastal town above the sea, with nearby beaches and Suvarnadurg fort offshore from Murud.

Dapoli is a small coastal town in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, in the heart of the Konkan coast. Sitting at about 300 metres above sea level yet only a few kilometres from the sea, it has a pleasant climate year-round — cooler than the coast but with easy access to beaches.

The area around Dapoli has several good beaches — Murud, Karde, and Anjarle are the closest — that remain far less crowded than the beaches near Mumbai or Goa. Offshore from Murud, the island fort of Suvarnadurg is one of the finest surviving Maratha sea forts on this coast. The town itself is historic: it was a British cantonment in the colonial era and the birthplace of a number of Maharashtra's important reformers and mathematicians. The surroundings are lush, green Konkan countryside, with mango and cashew orchards and a generally unhurried pace.

Dapoli is about 215 km from Mumbai and 180 km from Pune — accessible as a weekend escape but still off the tourist circuit.

When to Go

The best time to visit Dapoli is October to February, when the monsoon has ended, the vegetation is still green from the rains, and the temperatures are comfortable — typically 20–28°C. The beaches are calm and swimmable. March and April are warmer and drier; May brings heat and humidity ahead of the monsoon.

The monsoon (June to September) transforms the Konkan coast dramatically. The Western Ghats behind Dapoli turn intensely green, waterfalls appear on every hillside, and the countryside is beautiful. However, the sea is rough and swimming is dangerous; many roads can become difficult to access after heavy rain. Some guesthouses close for the season.

Diwali and Ganesh Chaturthi bring domestic visitors in significant numbers; book accommodation well ahead during these festivals.
