The most dramatic viewpoint in the Lonavala area, Tiger's Leap (Vaaghjai) stands at the edge of the Sahyadri escarpment about 12 km from town, where the plateau drops away in a sheer basalt cliff to the plains below. The name comes from the shape of the outcrop, which from a certain angle resembles a leaping tiger.
On a clear day the view across the Deccan stretches for kilometres — a sharp transition from the green highland to the flat lowland that makes the geological scale of the ghats immediately legible. In the monsoon, when waterfalls cascade down the cliff face below and wisps of cloud roll in and out, the viewpoint is at its most theatrical. This is the season most visitors come.
The site is about 12 km from town, reached by auto-rickshaw or hired car. Allow 30–45 minutes at the viewpoint. It is busiest on weekend mornings during July and August; weekday visits are far quieter. The last stretch of road to the viewpoint can be busy with vendors and parked vehicles on monsoon weekends — be prepared for a short walk from wherever you can park.
