Harike Bird Sanctuary protects one of northern India's important wetlands, formed around the confluence of the Beas and Sutlej rivers. In winter it draws migratory birds in large numbers, making it a rewarding excursion for patient birders and photographers.
The sanctuary is well outside Amritsar, so it needs an early start and realistic expectations about access. Bring binoculars and treat the visit as a landscape and wildlife outing rather than a manicured park.
