Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum

Museum in the former summer palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, focused on Sikh royal history

The Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum gives Amritsar another historical register beyond the Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh. It occupies the former summer palace of the Sikh ruler in Ram Bagh and focuses on his life, court, military power, and the wider Sikh kingdom of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The museum is not as polished as India's best national collections, but the setting and subject matter make it worthwhile. Go if you want to understand why Ranjit Singh remains such a large figure in Punjab's memory, then walk the surrounding garden to place the palace back into the city.
