Hanumangarh

Northern Rajasthan agricultural town near Kalibangan's Indus Valley ruins and Bhatner Fort.

Hanumangarh is an agricultural town in northern Rajasthan near the Punjab border. It is best known for the Kalibangan archaeological site, one of the most important Indus Valley Civilization excavation sites in India, located about 30 km south of town. The ruins date back to around 3000 BCE and include evidence of the earliest known ploughed field in the world.

The town itself is not a conventional tourist destination, but history enthusiasts will find Kalibangan and the Bhatner Fort — one of the oldest forts in India, dating to the 3rd century, and the site of some of the subcontinent's most fought-over medieval battles — worth a detour.

Things to Do

Hanumangarh's two main attractions are the Bhatner Fort in town and the Kalibangan archaeological site 30 kilometres to the south. Both require some effort to appreciate — Bhatner is partially ruined and lacks signage, and Kalibangan is an active site that requires advance arrangements. But for anyone interested in ancient and medieval history, both are well worth the detour.
