Anokhi is the benchmark for Rajasthani block-printed fabrics — a fashion brand that started in Jaipur in 1970 and has since expanded nationally, but whose flagship remains here. The clothes are made from natural fabrics hand-printed in the traditional hand-block technique using vegetable dyes, but the designs are contemporary rather than heritage-kitsch. The result is the kind of thing that's genuinely wearable, which separates it from most of the block-print clothing in the bazaars.
Fixed prices and good quality control mean you can buy without the exhausting negotiation the tourist bazaars require. The selection ranges from salwar kameez and kurtas to tablecloths, bags, and home furnishings. It's not cheap by Indian standards, but the quality justifies it.
There's also an Anokhi museum in Amber (the Anokhi Museum of Hand Printing) if you want to understand the block-printing process in depth before or after shopping.
