Sanganer (Paper and Textile Village)

Village famous for handmade paper and block-printed textiles, with workshops open to visitors

Address Sanganer, Jaipur (15 km south of city center)

Sanganer, 15 km south of Jaipur on the Tonk Road, is where much of the handmade paper and block-printed textile production for Jaipur's shops actually takes place. The village has been a center for both crafts since at least the 17th century, and its workshops (karkhanas) are still the primary production sites for the block-printed fabrics sold in Jaipur's bazaars.

Handmade paper here is made from recycled cotton fabric (dhobi waste from laundries), pulped and dried on frames in the traditional manner. The paper is used for notebooks, greeting cards, lampshades, and decorative items. Several workshops offer demonstrations and sell directly; the prices are lower than in the city shops.

The block-printing karkhanas work in the same way: you can watch printers applying hand-carved blocks to fabric in systematic, repetitive strokes, the same process used for centuries. Some workshops cater explicitly to visitors; others are production facilities where you're watching a working process. Worth combining with a visit to Chokhi Dhani, which is also on the Tonk Road.
