Barrackpore is a town on the west bank of the Hooghly, 25 km north of Kolkata, which served as the military headquarters for British India during the colonial period. The cantonment area still has fine examples of colonial-era architecture and the riverfront Gandhi Ghat is a pleasant place to walk. The town is historically significant as the site of early episodes of the 1857 Mutiny — Mangal Pandey's act of rebellion began here. The Mangal Pandey Park commemorates him. Barrackpore is easily reached from Kolkata by train or road.
