Barrackpore's interest is largely historical. The colonial cantonment survives better here than in most Indian cities — the riverfront promenade, the Government House grounds, and the parade areas where the 1857 Mutiny began are all within walking distance of each other. The town is small enough to cover on foot in half a day.
