Nusa Lembongan

Small island southeast of Bali with reef trips, seaweed farms, limestone coves, and scooter lanes.

Nusa Lembongan is the gentler member of Bali's southeastern island trio. It sits between mainland Bali and wilder Nusa Penida, close enough for a day trip from Sanur but better with at least one night. The island is small, dry, and low-slung, with lanes narrow enough to keep traffic slow and a coast that shifts from calm bays to wave-battered cliffs in minutes.

The classic Lembongan day loops around the southwest: Devil's Tear, Dream Beach, and Sandy Bay are all close together. Mushroom Bay is the easiest beach base, while the Yellow Bridge connects the island to smaller Nusa Ceningan.

The water is the other reason to come. Boats run to snorkelling sites around Lembongan and Penida, with manta ray trips depending on conditions. Seaweed farming, once the island's main business, still shapes the shallows in places, though tourism has changed the economy fast.

Lembongan is more developed than it used to be, but it has not turned into south Bali. Come for a few quiet days of scooters, swims, reef boats, and early nights, not for nightlife or shopping.

Getting Around

Scooters are the standard way to get around Nusa Lembongan, but the lanes are narrow and sandy in places. If you are not confident on two wheels, use local pickup trucks or buggy-style island taxis for the main loop.

Distances are short. Jungut Batu, Mushroom Bay, Dream Beach, and the Yellow Bridge can all be linked in a relaxed half day. After dark, take transport rather than walking unlit lanes.

Getting There

Fast boats run from Sanur to Nusa Lembongan throughout the day, with the crossing usually taking 30 to 45 minutes. Most services land at Jungut Batu or Mushroom Bay; check your landing point before booking, as it affects where you should stay.

Boats also connect Lembongan with Nusa Penida and the Gili/Lombok routes through some operators. Seas can be rough in the wet season, and cancellations are possible when swell is high.

Things to Do

Nusa Lembongan is small enough to explore in a day but pleasant enough to slow down. The strongest loop combines the southwest cliffs and beaches, the Yellow Bridge to Ceningan, and a snorkelling trip if the sea is calm.
