Potato Head Beach Club

Address Jl. Petitenget 51B, Seminyak

Potato Head opened in 2010 and effectively invented the Bali beach club as it now exists. The amphitheatre-shaped venue, with its arc of antique window shutters facing the ocean, has a swimming pool, several bars, a clutch of restaurants, and lawn space packed with day-beds from mid-afternoon onwards.

A minimum spend applies for the pool and the loungers, but the lawn outside is free. The cocktails are good and expensive; the sunset show — DJ, fire performers, hundreds of phones held aloft — is the most photographed thing in Seminyak. Reserve in advance for a bed; the venue caps capacity and turns away walk-ups on busy days.

A story
The facade is made from 6,600 reclaimed antique window shutters, sourced from villages across Java and assembled into a fan-shaped wall by Indonesian architect Andra Matin. The hotel that grew up behind it claims to be the world's first zero-waste resort — even the lobby furniture is made from recycled plastic ocean trash.
