Tomb of Sunan Nyamplungan

A small whitewashed shrine in a hilltop graveyard about three kilometres north of the main village houses the grave of the saint who, by tradition, gave Karimunjawa its name and brought Islam to the islands in the 16th century. The site is a minor pilgrimage destination for Javanese Muslims.

Visitors should dress modestly. The walk up through the village offers a sense of daily life away from the harbour. Quiet, atmospheric, and rarely visited by foreign travellers.

A story
Sunan Nyamplungan, also known as Amir Hasan, was the son of the 16th-century Javanese saint Sunan Muria. According to legend his father, dissatisfied with his son's religious progress, sent him to live in 'the island that looks faint from Java' — *karimun-jawa* — to study by himself. The island's name comes from that exile.
